Happy Halloween!

… and since you’re here, you can go ahead and wish me an early Happy Birthday, too. My birthday is tomorrow (the 1st), All Saint’s Day, because I’m a saint. Yes, I am!

I am, too.

Don’t argue.

Since it’s my Birthday Weekend and what I love to do is swim, I swam an extra long time this morning and plan to swim an extra long time tomorrow, which is the last day my community’s pool will be heated this year. Which means it’s the last day I’ll get to swim outside this year.

Last night we watched Charlie Brown and The Great Pumpkin, and carved our pumpkins. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to carve, so I carved two sides of my pumpkin.

A scary skeleton hand (that was hard to do)…

And a tombstone…

Tony carved Yoda on his pumpkin. That was pretty challenging, too.

No Halloween would be complete without showing you the pet’s costumes*, now would it?

Here we have Bug, our female cat. She was taking a nice mid-morning nap before I hauled her out of her nap cave for the photo shoot. She wasn’t too thrilled, and when we were done and I put her back, a paw came swiping out at me to let me know her true feelings about the whole thing.

Next up, we have Ripper. He, too, was sleeping but was more frightened about the whole thing than he was ticked. I would be, too, I mean HELP, THERE’S A SPIDER ON HIS HEAD!!

And then Slasher, who was lounging on the couch taking a nap. He was kind of tough to get a picture of with his costume. Count Catula (like a feline version of Dracula?).

Ohhh, and then we have Tug. My little Pumpkin. Yes, that’s an adorable pose, but I think the move was more designed to rid himself of that annoying head piece than it was to be cute.

Snug is a pillow this year. HA HA! Look, twins!

Last, but certainly not least, I managed to capture our birdy, Yoda, in the act of saving the world! Never mind that her cape is made of toilet paper. She doesn’t know that!

She’s getting ready to take off and save the world! Go Super Birdy!

Happy Halloween everyone!**

*No animals were harmed in the making of this blog post, only interrupted naps… what were they doing last night, anyway?

**Happy Birthday to me (tomorrow)!!

Halloween Decorations!

In the last post, I showed you one of my inside decorations. I thought I’d also take a moment to share our outside decorations that Tony put up this year.

Here’s our Halloween flag. I know, we’re supposed fly our freak flag, but a Halloween flag with a cute black kitty on a pumpkin and “Happy Halloween” will have to suffice.

In our staircase window we have these light-up decorations… at the top, a spider & web, then a witch on a broomstick, then a pumpkin and at the bottom some scary RIP headstone thing.

In the evening, our blow up decorations come alive. We have two black kitties that puff up. Our neighbor’s kids love to come over and look at these, I think it’s part of their nightly ritual. I should get a picture of them one of these nights, it’s cute.

Here’s a view down the scary walkway to our front door. Last night I heard some solicitors go to our neighbor’s house. I was listening for them to come to my front door, but instead all I heard them say to each other was a low, “Ohhh, let’s keep going…”

Somebody’s grave is next to our house. Eep! Poor fellow, it gets moved every year. We should call him the traveling grave. Heh

View of our front door…

Plant with kitty, headstone and a huge spider protecting it all…

Another headstone that disguises the fog machine, which will gear up for Halloween night… wooooooo, spooky! We have black lights up above that illuminate it all in the evening.

In case you didn’t know…

Tug says “Hi.”

On our front door…

In our entry way…

There’s one other window with decorations and I still need to get a picture if it.

So that’s what our house looks like right now.

U2 Concert Review

You may have heard that U2 was in town this weekend. They were playing at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena — the 360° Tour (aka outdoor arenas).

Back when I was gainfully employed as a contributing member of society, I bought tickets the second they went on sale. Knowing that U2’s tickets usually sell out, and knowing the capacity of the Rose Bowl (92,000 seats), I figured it might be a good idea to accompany the ticket purchase with getting a room. Sometimes my genius ideas surprise even me. Getting a room is always a genius idea.

First off, let’s cover the bad — the idiots. Of course, there’s always the idiots in the world… like the people next to us in the parking area who were blaring non-U2 music so loudly that their stereo was distorted. *eye roll* Instead of hanging near their distorted world, I went up and sat on a grassy knoll under a tree and read my newspaper, while listening to Bono and Edge perform their sound checks. Far more enjoyable than distorted “canned” music. Or how about the group of people who walked by while Tony was sleeping before the concert in the back of the car (since he went to work this morning at 4:30 AM) and they saw him sleeping and YELLED at him about how he’d missed the great concert, thinking he’d wake up and be bummed. They really thought they were so funny and clever. I told them they were rude and was ready to take them on! Don’t mess with my husband! Then we had the dudes who were sitting next to us in the arena who were smoking cigars (I’m not a fan) and were surprised when the gal in front of them mentioned that some people might not enjoy the smell. I think I’m turning into a crotchety old lady!

Tony’s the huge U2 fan. Me, well, I know their music and unless you’ve had your head in a cave for over 20 years, you have too. The show was great — they set out to please their audience, and did they ever. They put everything they had into their show as musicians and kicked butt doing it. They were broadcast live on YouTube, which was pretty cool. (You can see the re-broadcast of it here: Link) They were very professional and started their show on time (with a disapproving nod toward Mariah Carey’s disastrous display of unprofessionalism at her concert in Anaheim).

The weekend went off like a well-synchronized assembly line. When we drove up there Saturday, we got every light green between our house to the freeway (not even kidding), had a leisurely dinner at Olive Garden (leftovers for concert day), spontaneously walking to the theater and learning the next showing of the movie we wanted to see started in 10 minutes. Sunday, we showed up with our general parking pass and were directed into a lot not too far from the gate we needed to enter. Better than that, we were directed to park under a tree! A great big shade tree!

I even had my very own MacGuyer moment! During the concert, a dude coming back to his seat stepped on the front of my flip-flop and the string between my toes broke! Imagining a flippy-floppy walk back to our car at midnight, I desperately looked around for ideas. I spotted a long string tied to a light cable. It wasn’t doing anything as far as I could tell, so I untied it, looped it through the plastic doo-dad, tied it over the “V” on the top of my shoe. The perfect temporary fix.

So I guess what I’m really admitting is, I stole a string from the Rose Bowl arena. When you’re watching the New Year’s football game, you can remember that and think of me. Here you thought you were gonna read a concert review…

Of course, we took pictures: Click to See

Project Time…

… or the post that goes on forever with lots of pictures.

I got a call on my resume last week and as I returned her call, my thoughts wailed, “I’m not ready to go back to work yet!!” It was an internal position at a headhunter firm, and during the course of the conversation she affirmed my resume was excellent. Which made me feel good, because I had been feeling quite insecure — I redesigned it quite a bit and I wondered if I’d done the right thing. While sadly the position wasn’t a good fit for either of us, we ended up laughing together over a few things while on the phone. It was exactly what I needed to feel a little uplifted and encouraged that day.

Which started me thinking about temp jobs… when I did temp work before, although it was hell on the nerves (repeated First Day of School syndrome) I loved it. If I do temping, it would give me some time to heal emotionally without the commitment required for a full-time job. Plus, you never know where you’ll end up… it could be in a really cool company.

****
In the meantime, in addition to getting my resume out there, I’ve done some other stuff here at home. First off, I finished the scanning project of my Aunt Edith’s pictures. Actually, I had finished it before, three or four years ago, but then I spilled milk in the hard drive where they were stored electronically and had to borrow the real pictures back and haven’t had the time, until now, to re-finish the project.

****
Also, something that’s been bugging me for awhile is my rolltop desk. I love my rolltop desk, but my biggest complaint is that I’ve not had anywhere to put things that I need to work on. I’ve tried various things, putting things here, or there, or off to the side, or up there, but it just doesn’t work and I haven’t had the time to figure out a real solution.

Well, I finally did. I didn’t think before demolition to take “before” pictures, so I had to re-create them. See this section right there is dead space.

It’s a cubby hole designed to hold one of these types of power supplies.

So I pulled off the surrounding wood, and the platform under it, all of which was very time consuming because I had to be careful that I didn’t scratch or mar the finished surface of the desk. But now I have a place where I can layer my work.

On the other side of the desk, over here, was this thing which can rotate around.

As large as it is, though, it’s not very practical because it has a partition in the middle… so you can’t put a folder in it, or anything really, except knick knack stuff. Clutter. That bugs me. It’s designed to fit perfectly in that space right there in the corner.

So I pulled it out and now have room for folders and files and stuff. Much more usable. Except I have no idea what to do with the knick knack shack, so it’s sitting on the floor next to my desk.

Oh, and all the cool magnets that I bought for work? I went to Home Depot and bought a small piece of sheet metal and stuck it to the back of my roll top desk and then stuck my magnets on it. I was going to paint the sheet metal black, but the silver color has kind of grown on me. Plus it has an added bonus of reflecting the light from the room, which brightens up what often times is a darker area.
Before…

After…

As you can see, I also sorted through the boxes I brought home from work and the fun decorations I had bought for my cubicle and moved them into my home desk now and I’m quite pleased with myself. It was therapeutic, as well as rewarding.

****
And… the other thing I did, at Vince‘s suggestion, was to order this little box.

Tony pulled the hard drive from my laptop that died last week and put it in there, essentially making it an external hard drive. From there, I was able to plug it into my working laptop and backup the information that was contained on the old hard drive… all for $9.99. A much more reasonable price than the $400-$500 quoted at Best Buy.

Industrious me… now, what I would love to do is find or make a coaster to put my drinks on, with a houndstooth or scroll type pattern, which would match the rest of my desk stuff. Ideas, anyone?

Catch Up & July’s Searches

The GYN Appointment — I had my annual GYN appointment this past week. With a different GYN from last year. I liked the GYN I saw last year, but there were a couple things that irritated me. The most insulting part was the nurse who came in to prep the room for the next patient before I was finished dressing after the exam. That just stuck in my craw. Second was, I had to pay for parking. As the year wore on and I tried to get prescriptions for the vitamins I was taking, it was a big hoopla because it took the doctor a week to approve the prescription (for a vitamin!!), then their office wouldn’t fax or call the prescription into the pharmacy, they wanted me to come pick it up… drive 40 minutes round trip AND PAY PARKING? I think not. I was pretty sure I was going to move on. Then it took them a month and a half to fax an authorization to my insurance company so I could be referred to a reproductive endocrinologist. My insurance company (!!) was even badgering them for it.

Then I worked with my RE’s office and I saw how gynecological care should be and I realized there really is no excuse for the shoddy treatment that so many women endure to get such an important annual exam. I asked so many of my female co-workers if they had a GYN they liked and would recommend, most of them just waved their hand and said, “Well, I guess he/she is OK, but I should probably search for a new one…” I think it’s kind of like if you’ve had blurry vision your whole life, you just deal with it. You know that corrective lenses could probably make things better, because you’ve heard about it, but you have no idea what crystal clear vision is like until you experience the difference for yourself.

Anyway, as someone who’s received stirrup-care of one sort or another 21 times (at best count) since June of last year (more times than some couples have sex in a year — giddy up!!), with a full-spectrum of paraphernalia & caregivers — some of the absolute worst and thee absolute best — I can honestly say that I am optimistic about the “new” GYN and his staff. His bedside manner is awesome. The exam part of it was quick (fastest I’ve ever had — a good thing in this instance) and second only to my RE for gentleness. The exam part of it was so fast, that I have no idea how he had time to note the things he told me afterward. In fact, I intentionally didn’t tell him a couple of things and he figured them out. He was good and he knew his shit. I was impressed. He also knew all the caregivers I’ve worked with over the years, and his opinions of them validated mine. I told Grace that it was as if I’d stopped by see an old friend that I’d forgotten I knew, which is really weird considering what I was there for. Oh, and parking was free. We’ll see how it goes over the next year.

The Wedding — On Friday night, we attended the wedding of some long-time friends. Well, one of them is a long-time friend, Tony’s known the guy since junior high (if not longer) and Tony was instrumental in getting his friend and the lady he married together. It was in 2006 that Tony and his buddy flew to Arizona. While at the airport, they met this lovely lady in line at security. They got to talking and his buddy flustered her so much that once she was through the line, she grabbed her shoes and left her purse and laptop on the conveyor belt. Tony urged him to go after her and get her phone number, he argued against it, not thinking she was interested, but at Tony’s insistence, he ultimately followed her, got her information… and the rest is history.

There’s this magnetic connection that I love to see in couples, the best way I can describe it is to say that it’s an unconscious body language thing. When one person in the relationship talks, the other leans in to hear. Or there’s always some sort of contact, whether it’s holding hands or knees resting against each other. Or there’s the eyes, when one is across the room the other is always seeking them. It’s a second-by-second intrinsic magnetic balancing act and the couples don’t even realize it’s taking place. It’s a mutual giving, adding to each other, rather than taking away. Tony’s parents have it with each other, Tony’s brothers have it with their wives, Tony and I have it, several of our friends have it in their relationships — and these two have it.

We’re so happy for them, and excited that they took this step together.

July’s Searches (listed in bold):

“my poor toe” — nooooo, MY poor toe. Funny thing you should mention that, yesterday I went to Walmart and pulled a deodorant off the rack to purchase. The spring loaded distributor shot the next deodorant in line off the shelf and torpedoed it with great force directly onto the toe I injured about a month ago. Man, that hurt so bad I stood there for a minute while my ears felt like they were going to explode and my eyes watered. Interesting about pain, huh, no matter where it is on the body, it always goes straight to the head. Then I ever so gently put the torpedo back on the shelf, along with the one I was going to buy and limped away.

club soda good for oily scalp?, shampoos for imflammed scalp, club soda or water after swimming? after swimming club soda hair treatment, no poo asian hair, is it okay to do an apple cider vinegar rinse after swimming? — OK, look. Here’s the deal, people, chlorine is probably one of the worst things you can do to your hair and scalp, aside from burning or frying it chemically, that is. So, yes, club soda, apple cider vinegar or just plain water is FINE. Shampoo is the second worst thing. I use a baking soda/water concoction. But if you must use shampoo, go with baby shampoo. Expect an adjustment period while your scalp figures out what the hell you just did (stopped irritating it) and expect any inflammation (or imflammation) to clear up within a couple weeks.

i got a hard black mole on my scalp — Are you sure you don’t got a tumor?

life’s oddities — well, thanks for that one, Google.

bad show mariah — her show wasn’t just bad, it was horrible. Save the cost of a concert ticket and just buy her CDs. You’ll actually get to listen to complete songs (instead of medleys) and she’ll likely even do some vocal acrobatics (instead of making your eyes water because her voice is so weak).

metrostyle model with the gap in her teeth — Look, if you’re trying to hire her, let me just tell you, Metrostyle lost sales from me because I got so distracted by her teeth. I’m not saying gapped teeth are bad, I know some very lovely people who have gapped teeth. What I’m saying is that if one chooses modeling as a profession and said model is displaying clothes, it might be a fine idea for the model to keep her gapped teeth concealed behind her lovely, closed lips.

“someday i’ll laugh” — Why wait?

Weekend Already? Really?

It’s been a good week. Idyllic, even. I took some vacation time this week to hang out with my mom and make sure that her needs were met. We’ve been going swimming every morning, it’s been hot during the days but at that time of the morning, the temperature is just perfect for a swim outdoors.

My mom and I hung out at home today, she worked on paperwork and I got through the stack of paperwork that I’ve been ignoring for who knows how long. I’m pleased with myself for that. Between that and the hour long nap I took, the other thing I managed to do was upload pictures from our jaunt in San Francisco, which can be found here: LINK

I made some more of my ACV rinse (apple cider vinegar, aloe vera & a stalk of rosemary) this afternoon and left the bottles sitting on the kitchen counter — they’re really kind of pretty. Tony saw them tonight and commented that there’s a plant growing in my bottles. For some reason that made me laugh.

We had dinner tonight with Grace and her family. When Tony and I got married nearly four years ago, Grace and her husband were a special part of our wedding. Her husband photographed the event and Grace was, for all intents and purposes, informally my Maid of Honor. Or technically Matron of Honor, I suppose. My mom wasn’t able to attend our wedding in person, so she attended via telephone and Grace was the one who held the phone during the ceremony. Tonight was the first time my mom and my friend were finally able to meet each other.

I took my mom over to the train station yesterday so she could go visit my brother. Watching that train leave with her on it made me terribly sad, even though I knew she’d be back in just a few hours. So I went to the grocery store and bought her some fig newtons — I know she loves those things. It made me feel better and they made her happy later that night.

On Wednesday, Tony’s mom took my mom shopping — I think it’s very cool that our mommies get along so well that they can spend a day shopping together. I’m guessing they could probably spend a lot of time together and not even notice that it was passing so quickly. During that time, since I wasn’t needed at home, I went into work for four hours. That night, we met some longtime family friends in Downtown Disney for dinner. It made for a long day for us, an even longer day for them (they drove up from San Diego county to meet up with us), but it was so worth it and we all enjoyed it.

My mom even got to meet my Fish Whisperer — in a surprise visit, he stopped by to drop off some spirulina (fish food) and pick up some tank dividers that I’m no longer using. She’s heard so much about him and he saved her grandfish, it seemed pretty cool that she got to meet him.

Our little birdy loves having someone here all day. She chirps and chatters away to express her happiness. Snug has been creeping out and actually let my mom pet him today, I think, which is really sweet. We had a hummingbird sitting on our string of lights in the back yard for six or seven hours today. At one point, I even opened the slider door to get a better picture and the hummingbird just looked at me and didn’t even care. My mom worried that maybe the hummingbird is sick, do hummingbirds normally perch somewhere for that long? I hope so, because I don’t want to find a dead hummer in one of my plants back there.

We have family time tomorrow, Sunday I take my mom to the airport and then more family time Sunday afternoon. For once, I wish this week could be replayed, or at the very least I wish I could just press the pause button on time for a few more days.

I wish you all a Happy Weekend!

San Francisco – Overview.

This time when we went to San Francisco, we did a couple things differently than we usually do when we travel.

The first and biggest thing we did differently was, we met my mom in San Francisco and she joined us on our adventures. Meeting her there was a special blessing and really made it feel like a real summer vacation for me. I think that feeling had to do with relating her presence to childhood summer vacations of which she was usually a part.

Anyway, the second thing we did differently was, we chose to use public transportation instead of renting a car. Let me just say this about that… after the first bus ride, my nickname for the bus routes became “the 28 butt” or “the 30 butt” instead of “bus”, because it was often standing room only, and all we could see were a bunch of butts, instead of the Golden Gate Bridge or the park. The other thing about that was, public transportation adds a lot of waiting time to the commute. 5 minutes here, 7 minutes there and “bus arriving” but it’s still another minute or two before the bus gets there and pretty soon a 10 minute drive is a 30-40 minute adventure. On the upside, if you have the time to waste, public transportation is fairly cheap.

That being said, here’s what we managed to do while up there. On Friday we met my mom and then bused over to and walked the Golden Gate Bridge (3.4 mile walk, roundtrip), walked through Fort Mason, visited Ghiradelli Square, and had dinner at a restaurant named Scoma’s — a pretty special restaurant and we enjoy it on the rare occasions we go there.

Saturday we went to Coit Tower, walked up the crooked part of Lombard Street, visited the outside of the Spreckel’s mansion, which is owned by author Danielle Steel, had an hour and half of free time (which I used to check us in online for our flights the following day and reserve a hostel for my mom when she goes back next week) and then went to Pier 39, followed by a walk to Pier 33 to depart to Alcatraz for their night tour — we’ve been wanting to do that for a couple years now.

Sunday found us heading back to Alcatraz for their early morning garden tour, which is only offered Friday and Sunday mornings. I’ve long loved the restoration that they’ve been doing in the gardens of Alcatraz and was excited to be able to walk in areas that normally are corded off from the public. In addition to that, the volunteer docents offered a lot of information about the island that isn’t offered elsewhere. It was fascinating and absolutely beautiful.

And then we took public transportation back to the airport. Which meant we still haven’t ridden on the cable car!

Here’s a couple funny experiences we had:

Friday — An elderly lady boarded the bus, paid and turned to look for a seat. The bus lurched forward and she toppled, thankfully landing on the homeless guy’s lap a seat over from me (instead of landing on the floor). I reached for her arm, somehow wrapped my arm around her shoulders and guided her to the seat next to mine. As her bottom settled into the seat, the pre-recorded message broadcasted over the speakers of the bus, an impersonal lady’s voice said, “Please hold on!” The elderly lady muttered, “Yeah, I got that… now.”

Friday — just after we’d finished walking the Golden Gate Bridge, we were waiting with a group of people for the bus to arrive. A guy dressed in jogging paraphernalia pulled out his cell phone and called someone while jogging in place. According to his conversation, he had recently moved to San Francisco. He told his friend how much he loved it in San Francisco, that he was so glad he’d moved here, he can jog the bridge whenever he wants and then finished with, “I love this bridge so much, I think I love it more than I love you!” A bicyclist pedaled by just in time to hear that last line and said, in perfect sync, “That’s cold, dude.” Everyone waiting for the bus totally cracked up, even the guy on the phone.

I have pictures… of course I do. Some very lovely. But they’re on the hard drive upstairs and I’m on the computer downstairs.

This and That.

Right now, I have the dishwasher running, the laundry going, cleaned out the cat litter boxes, juiced a bunch of lemons for juice freezing, and I just finished making Guava/Passion/Orange homemade popsicles.

My swims this weekend have been peaceful and at 45 minutes each, feel like accomplishments. In addition, the pool is now being heated to 85 degrees. I know this because when I swim in the early morning hours, the pool thermostat reads 84 and the heat is kicking on. I was told the pools in our community would only be heated to 75 this summer. I’m sure not going to ask about it, I’m just going to count it as a blessing.

Particularly since we invited the Steve/Marigold/Huck/Milo Show over for the 4th of July, with enticements of a swim in the pool, since it’s so warm — 1st time for Milo. Oh my, it was good to see them and I enjoyed observing Milo’s analytical approach to the whole pool thing — he stared it down, not even splashing until he’d been in there for at least 15 minutes. At that point, he started making noises and pointing at pool toys — like, “Hey you, bring me that so I can drop it to the bottom again!” And THEN, finally, the smiles, the hard earned smiles came forth from Milo when his brother’s silliness became too irresistible. This is really their mom’s story to tell, I suppose, but it was just so good to see them! You can’t be focused on serious grown-up stuff when the littles are around.

When they went home (the kiddies were tired), we went down the street to see the fireworks over the lake. Every year they do this show, but this was the first time we’ve attended. It was kind of a spontaneous thing, staying home, because normally we head over to a city where we can legally set off our personal fireworks (I think the plan is to save what we bought on Thursday and didn’t use for New Year’s). The fireworks show here at home was a fun experience and quite a production for such a small town event. I climbed a low slung tree for seating and viewing comfort as lots of people turned out for it, even double parking along the street!

I hate that my husband has had to work this weekend, particularly in this heat. It’s been hot, nearing 100 in the shade. Exactly the type of weather one would expect for the 4th of July weekend. But he works outside on the weekend, on asphalt and dirt — doubly hot. Please keep my man in your prayers and/or thoughts. I don’t know how he manages to keep going sometimes…

Hair Update — Week 7, no shampoo.

I think I pretty much have this thing figured out. I only use the Baking Soda Rinse (BSR) every 2 to 3 days now. I use the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse (ACV) every day.

I adjusted my ACV recipe a bit this past week. It’s now as follows:

1/4 c ACV (reduced from 1/3 c from last week)
1/2 c aloe vera (increased from 1/3 c from last week)
10″ sprig of rosemary (no adjustment)
In 1 QT bottle with tap water (no adjustment)

I’m just playing with the mixture to maximize moisture. Chlorine is very drying, ACV acts as a clarifier — which removes chlorine, but also moisture… at least that’s what it seems to be doing to my hair. Thus the increase in aloe vera and decrease in ACV. I used Scalpicin once this week, due to my scalp feeling inflamed. My hormones have been a bit more dramatic in their changing this cycle, and the inflammation coincided with that, so I think that was probably the problem.

Ohhh, I keep meaning to mention that I’m now only using baking soda to cleanse my face. I keep a container of dry baking soda by my sink. When I wash my face, I rinse my face, then pull some baking soda out and make a paste of it. It’s very effective at removing makeup and is gritty enough to exfoliate dry skin and cleanse pores. I’m on week 3 of that, so things may change as hormones change… we’ll see.

Taken today, natural lighting (no flash).

This week is work, of course, but it’s another 4-day work week for me since we’re taking Friday off to go to San Francisco next week. My mom will meet us there and we’ll go to Alcatraz at Night, and then Alcatraz Morning Garden Tour. Probably some other stuff, too.

Not Cool.

The weekend was one of mixed emotions. Happiness that I was able to spend time with a friend of mine celebrating her marriage at her delayed wedding reception on Saturday. Casual beach party, complete with a BBQ and bonfire, as well as a rousing, competitive, unscored game of volleyball… which I managed to wrench my toe while playing, but I saved the ball! My poor toe! I’m not sure if it’s sprained, fractured or broken. I tried to get an x-ray this morning, but after waiting an hour and being told there were still two people ahead of me, I left because I had things to do.

Such as attend Grace’s daughter’s 3rd birthday party today. She turned 3 on Friday, can you believe it’s been three years ago already that Mia was born? I sure can’t. Tony’d had a rough morning at his work this morning and was really looking forward to seeing Grace and her family, as was I. So it was well worth it to leave a crummy doctor’s office to see friends.

Those were the highlights.

Hairy Fathers.

The Father Part

First of all, if you’re a dad — Happy Father’s Day. I hope you know how blessed you are.

If you have a father’s heart but don’t have a child, I also wish you a Happy Father’s Day because I’m sure you find ways to nurture and love other living creatures in your life.

Hair Update — Week 5, No Shampoo

I’m still working on perfecting my mixtures.

My “shampoo”, the baking soda rinse (BSR), is great. I still use 1/2 cup BS in a 1 QT bottle of tap water. No changes required.

My “conditioner”, the Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinse, has taken some work. The current recipe is as follows:

1/3 c ACV
1/4 c Aloe Vera
2 five inch stalks of rosemary
1 QT bottle w/ tap water

Last week in my ACV rinse, I only used 4 tbsp of Aloe Vera, and that didn’t provide nearly enough moisture against the constant chlorine exposure my hair gets, which is why I upped the amount. I may increase it even more when I mix the next batch. Surprisingly, rosemary is the scent that I smell in my hair throughout the day, not the ACV.

I tried alternating the sulfate free conditioner every other cleaning, but for whatever reason, it throws off the texture of my hair and makes it feel oily and icky. I tried a different brand today and it seems much better right now… but then again, I think Sunday are my “perfect” hair day of the week.

Tonight my hair even withstood successfully the damage that a just turned one-year-old little boy can inflict. I’m really not confident that it would have done very well 5 weeks ago!

If you followed along on my Twitter updates (<——over there), you'd be in the know that we had Dinner with Shamu at Sea World San Diego on Saturday night (good food, OK show, much prefer the breakfast to the dinner) and a most enjoyable day with family today.

I hope your weekend was just as enjoyable?
